Major uses of sulphur in industry

1. Sulphuric acid production — the biggest use

The largest industrial use of sulphur today is producing sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄).

And sulphuric acid is often called one of the world’s most important industrial chemicals because it is used in:

  • Fertilizer production, especially phosphate fertilizers
  • Petroleum refining
  • Metal processing and pickling
  • Chemical manufacturing
  • Batteries
  • Detergents and pigments

Sicily had major natural sulphur deposits, and by the 19th century it became the world’s dominant supplier of sulphur.

Sicilian sulphur was particularly important for producing sulphuric acid, which was becoming increasingly necessary during the Industrial Revolution.

The Industrial Revolution expanded sulphur demand

During the 18th and 19th centuries, factories increasingly needed sulphuric acid for chemical manufacturing.

One especially important development was the Leblanc process, introduced in the late 18th century, which used sulphuric acid in the production of soda ash. This helped establish sulphur as a strategically important industrial raw material.

A major change: the Frasch process

The Frasch process, developed by Herman Frasch, allowed underground sulphur deposits to be extracted using superheated water. This made large-scale sulphur production much cheaper and reduced Sicily’s dominance.
